This exhibition presents a selection of over 50 works, never before seen, from its Permanent Collection of 19th & 20th century American Art donated by several individuals including Elkhart native, Dr. Steven G. Conant. This temporary exhibit of paintings, drawings, lithographs and sculpture will allow the museum to utilize all of its nine galleries to showcase works from the permanent collection now numbering nearly 2,700 pieces.

Since 1993 Dr. Steven Conant, a resident of Indianapolis and one of the top collectors in the state, has donated 466 works of art to the Midwest Museum of American Art. About 80% of the works in this exhibit have been donated by Dr. Conant over the past two years. Other collectors from across the country have contributed and many living artists have donated significant works as well. The ehxibit will feature pieces of art donated by Indiana artists including Harold Langland, Abner Hershberger, and Lina Zerkle as well as works of art donated by other individuals and organizations.

This exhibit illustrates the exciting story of challenging changes in the American fabric of life as it is reflected in the art created over a 120 year period. Beginning with drawings created by Indiana artist William Forsyth and Otto Stark of the Hoosier Group in the 1880s the exhibit springs forward into the Early American Modernist times echoed in the art of John Marin. From the turn of the 20th Century past the post-war era, emphasizing the contributions of both realist artists and the Abstract Expressionists, the exhibition will feature the work of 40 American artists.

These cultural assets attest to the richness of intellectual and creative life in America throughout the Modernist and Post Modernist era. The Midwest Museum is pleased to present these works of art as a special exhibit with the sponsorship of the CORSON FAMILY FOUNDATION
